FAQ: Tickets are on a sliding scale. How do I pick my ticket for Elevate & Amplify?
We are offering tickets on a sliding scale.
Tickets are available at a range of prices, a donation option if you would like to pay-what-you-can and 75 FREE tickets for BIPOCs who currently find themselves in financial stress.
We recognize that how we each look at privilege in different ways. The following questions might help you pick the ticket for you.
Disclaimer: We created this sliding scale based on individual’s ability to assess their own privilege rather than proving disadvantages.
How do I pick my ticket on the sliding scale?
- do you comfortably meet your basic needs (food, water, shelter)?
- do you have expendable income (buy new things easily, afford vacation, time off from work)?
- do you have advanced degrees?
- do you have access to healthcare and benefits?
- do you have a safety net of wealthy friends or family?
- do you have citizenship in this country?
Disclaimer: This is not a fulsome list on how to understand privilege. These questions are adapted from a list by Canadian Unitarian Council.
How do you decide? Here’s what we suggest.
If all or most of your answers to the previous slide are yes, we suggest the Imaginer, Amplifier or Elevater ticket.
If you picked a mix of yes and no, we suggest either Innovator or Envisioner.
If you answered mostly no, we suggest a FREE ticket or pay-what-you-can via the donation portion.
Disclaimer: We recognize that varying options can lead to confusion Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
“When I pay more, I know that I am helping others to access the event. When I pay in the middle, I know I am helping the organizers cover costs. And when I pay at the bottom, I know I am letting my community hold me and support me. All of these are wonderful and acceptable ways of participating.”

All proceeds from Elevate & Amplify will be used to support the Department of Imaginary Affairs’ (DIA) programming in 2021, including oral storytelling in two Toronto parks this summer and program development for the Public Imagination Fund. The Public Imagination Fund is a project to imagine what funding would look like if centred on community, trust and relationships designed by BIPOC Youth.
Disclaimer: We are not experts on sliding scales and are learning about how to navigate equity and access to a conference about equity and access.
FAQ: I identify as White. Can I attend Elevate & Amplify?
This is a conference centred on BIPOC voices.
While each and every one of Elevate and Amplify’s panel speakers is BIPOC, absolutely everyone is welcome to attend the event.
E&A is an incredible opportunity to hear valuable perspectives and experiences that aren’t always given the spotlight in our sector and society, so we encourage everyone to attend.
Disclaimer: We believe to create equitable futures, we are going to need to involve a diversity of perspectives.
Why are the free tickets for BIPOCs only?
As we designed Elevate & Amplify, we made decisions to prioritize access for individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous and People-of-colour based on the resources we have available.
If you identify as white and find yourself currently under financial stress, we suggest using the donations ticket option to a pay-what-you-can.
“I thought that since this is a space being created to center BIPOC, I don’t want to take away from that. While I think I can be respectful of that space individually, I’m also conscientious of how this space and who it serves would change if there ends up being a sizable group of non-BIPOC. I didn’t want to contribute to decentering the conversation I guess and making people feel like they need to cushion or bound what they talk about in the space.”

FAQ: What is the Public Imagination Fund?
It is real, we promise!
The Public Imagination Fund is a project to imagine what funding would look like if centred on community, trust and relationships designed by BIPOC Youth.
The PIF, as we like to call it, will be run in cohorts. Each cohort will tackle design challenges around creating equity and access to funding for BIPOC Youth.
Each cohort member will receive funds for their own projects and to implement funding experiments.
Disclaimer: This is a brand new initiative to us, so what it looks like in our brains may not be what it looks like in reality.
